Technical SEO Checklist: Fix What Is Silently Killing Your Rankings
Great content cannot rank if search engines struggle to crawl, index or understand your website. Technical SEO problems are often invisible to site owners, yet they quietly hold back rankings across every page. Use this technical SEO checklist to find and fix the most common issues.
1. Make Sure Your Pages Can Be Crawled
- Check robots.txt is not blocking important pages or resources
- Submit an up-to-date XML sitemap in Google Search Console
- Fix broken internal links and remove links to deleted pages
- Keep important pages within a few clicks of the homepage
2. Fix Indexing Problems
Open the Pages report in Google Search Console and review why pages are not indexed. Common causes include accidental noindex tags, duplicate content, soft 404s and pages Google considers low value.
3. Use Canonical Tags Correctly
Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the main one. They are essential for e-commerce filters, tracking parameters and pages that exist at multiple URLs.
4. Improve Site Speed and Core Web Vitals
Speed affects rankings and conversions. Focus on Google’s Core Web Vitals:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the main content loads
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds to interactions
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how stable the layout is while loading
Compress and resize images, use modern formats such as WebP, remove unused scripts, enable caching and choose quality hosting.
5. Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly
Google uses mobile-first indexing, which means it primarily evaluates the mobile version of your site. Text should be readable without zooming, buttons easy to tap and content identical to desktop.
6. Secure Your Website With HTTPS
Every page should load over HTTPS, with HTTP versions redirecting permanently to the secure version.
7. Clean Up Redirects
Use 301 redirects for permanently moved pages and avoid redirect chains and loops, which waste crawl budget and slow users down.
8. Add Structured Data
Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and can make your pages eligible for rich results such as FAQs, reviews, products and breadcrumbs.
9. Optimize Site Architecture and Internal Linking
A logical structure with clear categories and descriptive internal links spreads authority to your most important pages and helps Google discover new content.
10. Fix Duplicate and Thin Content
Merge or improve pages that target the same keyword, and either strengthen or remove pages with little unique value.
