About the Data

Official Census Data, Always Current Easy to Use

Population figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program, showing resident population on July 1 of each year. Rankings, yearly change and growth since 2020 are calculated directly from the official data file.

1/ Official Source

Data is downloaded directly from census.gov and checked before use: state totals must add up exactly to the U.S. total.

2/ 50 States + D.C.

Washington, D.C. is included in the rankings. Puerto Rico is shown separately in the source note because it is not a state.

3/ Always Up to Date

The Census Bureau releases new estimates once a year. The tool checks for new data weekly and switches over once it passes validation.
