Every U.S. County, Official Figures Ranked
Population figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (Vintage 2025), showing resident population on July 1 of each year. Rank is the county’s position among all counties nationwide.
1/ Official Source
Data is downloaded directly from census.gov and validated: county totals must add up exactly to each state total.
2/ County Equivalents
Includes Louisiana parishes, Alaska boroughs and census areas, independent cities, Washington, D.C., and Connecticut’s nine planning regions.
3/ Always Up to Date
The Census Bureau releases new county estimates once a year. The tool checks weekly and switches to new data once it passes validation.

The Census Bureau’s 2025 estimates cover 3,144 counties and county equivalents across the 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Some states use other units: Louisiana has parishes, Alaska has boroughs and census areas, and some states have independent cities. Washington, D.C. is also treated as a county equivalent.
Connecticut has had no county governments since 1960. The Census Bureau now uses its nine planning regions as county equivalents, so these replace the eight former counties.
Los Angeles County, California is the most populous county in the United States. Loving County, Texas has the smallest population.
